Q: How can I tell if the vanilla beans I bought from another supplier have already been used before?

A: One clue to tell if the vanilla beans you received have been used before is to check for moisture. Fresh beans always have some moisture to them (unless they have been deliberately dried).
But re-used vanilla beans typically have some wetness to them, which may even be visible inside the packaging. This is a sure-tell sign that they have most likely been used before, and then resold to you.

Suspiciously Low-Priced Vanilla Beans

Q: Why do some distributors sell vanilla beans at deep discounts?

A: This is related to repurposing vanilla beans that were first used in vanilla bourbon. In these cases the very same vanilla beans might be used two, three, or even four times for producing vanilla extract.
Then when there is hardly any flavor left they get repackaged and sold as new at a “deep discount.”
This sales tactic is used routinely by some unscrupulous distributors.
I believe this is dishonest, unfair to you, and cheapens the quality of the vanilla beans.
