A: One clue to tell if the vanilla beans you received have been used before is to check for moisture. Fresh beans always have some moisture to them (unless they have been deliberately dried). But re-used vanilla beans typically have some wetness to them, which may even be visible inside the packaging. This is a sure-tell sign that they have most likely been used before, and then resold to you. Suspiciously Low-Priced Vanilla Beans Q: Why do some distributors sell vanilla beans at deep discounts? A: This is related to repurposing vanilla beans that were first used in vanilla bourbon.
